  3. ***  VBRUN300.DLL required ***
  4.  
  5. This program requires VBRUN300.DLL (Visual Basic Runtime.)  
  6. VBRUN200.DLL and VBRUN100.DLL will not work.  The VBRUN300.DLL 
  7. file should be placed in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
  8.  
  9. VBRUN300.DLL is NOT included in FLASH.EXE, the self-extracting
  10. executable containing StudyMaster Flash Cards, because including
  11. it would greatly increase the size of the file, and many users
  12. already have VBRUN300.DLL anyways.  If you don't have it (which
  13. will be obvious because the program won't load!) many BBS's 
  14. have it, or it is available from CompuServe, GEnie, AOL, etc.
  15. If you *really* can't find it, send $2 to cover S&H and the cost
  16. of the disk to the registration address given later in this
  17. file, and I will send you a copy.  Or, send $15 to get a registered
  18. copy of the latest shareware version.  Be sure to note that you 
  19. need a copy of VBRUN300.DLL, as it is not normally included on the
  20. shareware disks.

  22. *** Changes in version 2.10d from 2.10b and c:  Version 'd' is a
  23. maintenance upgrade for better compatibility with Windows 95.

  25. ***  How to install Shareware Version ***
  26.  
  27. Simple... just copy the file FLASH.EXE into its own directory and
  28. run it.  All the files will extract.  Then, install an icon into
  29. Program Manager for the file SMFC_20.EXE and run the program!
  30.  
  31. To install an Icon in Windows 3.1, open up the program group you 
  32. want to use (such as Main or Applications.)  Then, use the 
  33. NEW... command on Program Manager's FILE menu.  In the resulting 
  34. dialog, choose PROGRAM ITEM and then the OK button. You will see 
  35. another dialog.  Into the DESCRIPTION field enter "StudyMaster 
  36. Flash Cards", and into the COMMAND LINE field enter the full path
  37. to the directory you installed StudyMaster Flash Cards in.  The
  38. executable file is called SMFC_20.EXE. For example, if you
  39. installed the software into a directory called FLASH on your C 
  40. drive, enter C:\FLASH\SMFC_20.EXE into the COMMAND LINE field.
  41. Then, choose the OK button and you will see the icon.  Double-
  42. click it to run the program.

  44. Remember, you MUST have VBRUN300.DLL (Visual Basic Runtime) to
  45. use this software.

  48. *** Windows 95 Compatibility ***
  49.  
  50. StudyMaster Flash Cards runs fine under Windows 95.
  51.  
  52. If you are running StudyMaster in regualar VGA resolution 
  53. (640x480), you should set the taskbar to Auto-Hide.  If you 
  54. don't do this, then certain of the larger Windows (namely, 
  55. the Edit Window and the Take Test window) will not completely 
  56. fit on the screen, because the Task Bar displays OVER the 
  57. Window.  To set the taskbar to Auto-Hide, choose 
  58. Settings-->Taskbar on the START menu, and select the Auto-Hide 
  59. button in the resulting dialog box.
  60.  
  61. There are two problems with Windows 95 we are aware of:
  62.  
  63. 1) Disappearing Modal Dialog Boxes when switching applications
  64.  
  65. If a modal dialog box is on the screen (a modal dialog box is
  66. one which suspends operation of the rest of the program until 
  67. you exit the box) and you switch to another application using 
  68. the Taskbar, then switch back to StudyMaster Flash Cards, the 
  69. modal dialog box can go UNDERNEATH the main window, thereby 
  70. making the modal dialog box inaccessible, and hence making
  71. StudyMaster appear to freeze.  To remedy this problem,type
  72. ALT-TAB on the keyboard, which will bring the modal dialog
  73. box back to the top.

  75. 2) Card Window Pop-up Menu doesn't work right with Windows 95
  76.  
  77. The Card Window Pop-up Menu's autopositioning feature does not
  78. work right with Windows 95.  We are working on a fix for this,
  79. but in the meantime, we recommend that you use the Card Window
  80. QuickButton as a substitute.  There are also occasionally some
  81. odd interactions between Windows 95's use of the right mouse
  82. button to call up an Application Properties pop-up menu, and
  83. StudyMaster's use of the right mouse button to call up the
  84. Card Window Pop-up Menu. This problem manifests itself with an
  85. Application Properties pop-up menu appearing in an odd location
  86. on the screen when the Card Window Pop-up Menu should appear.
  87. This problem appears to be a case of Windows 95's not being as
  88. compatible with Windows 3.1 as Microsoft would like everyone
  89. to think!  Fortunately, the Card Window Pop-up Menu, while a
  90. nice feature, is hardly integral to the operation of StudyMaster
  91. Flash Cards.  This problem will be fixed in a later release.

  93. *** VIDEO DRIVER PROBLEMS WITH WINDOWS 3.1 / WFW ***
  94.  
  95. We have received a few (very few) reports of StudyMaster crashing
  96. with a GPF when the Picture Window displays a picture.  This 
  97. problem is not a bug in StudyMaster itself, but a generic problem 
  98. with the interaction of Visual Basic and poorly written video
  99. drivers.  This problem primarily occurs when using third-party
  100. video drivers which display a lot of colors in high resolution.
  101. If you wish to test for this problem, load the demonstration deck
  102. supplied with StudyMaster, and display the card which has the
  103. picture attached.
  104. If you receive a GPF when displaying a picture, contact your 
  105. graphics card supplier to receive an updated version of the driver
  106. for your graphics card and install it.  This will not only fix
  107. the problem with StudyMaster's picture display, but will in all
  108. likelihood prevent myriad other problems with your system.  If
  109. you cannot get an updated video driver, use the Control Panel to
  110. switch to the Microsoft-supplied Video Drivers that come with
  111. Windows.  In the two reported cases of this problem, switching 
  112. to the Microsoft supplied driver fixed it.

  114. ***  Changes to this version from the May 24, 1995 version
  115. (2.00a) are as follows:
  116. *  Improved Windows 95 compatibility.
  117. *  CardFlash lets you read the deck hands-free, at any speed you like.
  118. *  Automatic Backup in the Edit Window guards against data loss.
  119. *  Edit Window now has a maximize button.
  120. *  Load the deck you worked with last time, with one mouse click.
  121. *  Insert Special Characters in the Edit Window.
  122. *  Some minor bug fixes.

  124. ***  Changes from the January 7, 1995 version (1.31a) are

  127. *  Use any combination of bold, italic, underline, strikethrough,
  128.    and multiple colors in your cards.
  129. *  Use BITMAP (Windows Paintbrush format) picture files in your
  130.    cards.
  131. *  You no longer have to specify a complete pathname for graphics
  132.    and sound files.  If you use only the filename, the BITMAP or
  133.    WAVE file will load from the same directory as your deck.
  134. *  All-new card type -- "Select All Answers That Apply" lets you
  135.    make multiple choice cards with more than one (or no) correct
  136.    answer.
  137. *  Improved Test Summary dialog box now gives you a breakdown of
  138.    your test scores for each individual category.
  139. *  Automark your cards in the Review Test dialog box, based on
  140.    your score for each card.  A real time-saver!
  141. *  Fully updated on-line help explains all new program features.
  142. *  New and more attractive StudyMaster program icon.
  143. *  Version 2 reads Version 1 files directly -- no need to convert.

  147. ***  .VBX Files ***
  148. This program requires four .VBX files, which are included.
  149. They can stay in the directory into which you install StudyMaster
  150. Flash Cards.  If you already have these .VBX files, you can
  151. delete the copies in your Flash Cards directory, but before
  152. doing so, be sure that your other copies of the .VBX files are
  153. compatible.  They should be, but you never know what versions are
  154. out there.

  157. ***  Help Data File  ***

  159. Note that the help data for the shareware file is the unmodified
  160. help file from the commercial version.  The limitations of the
  161. shareware version are explained in the dialog box which displays
  162. when you run the program.

  164. The WFCHELP.FCH file must be in the same directory as the
  165. FLASHCRD.EXE file in order for on-line help to be accessible.

  197. ***  Commercial Version of StudyMaster Flash Cards  ***

  199. If you like this program, please consider ordering the full
  200. commercial version.  The commercial version is much more useful
  201. than the shareware version.  You can have much larger decks with 
  202. up to 95 categories and thousands of cards (as against 10 categories
  203. and 300 cards maximum for the shareware version), and you get 
  204. full use of the printing functions.

  206. The full version is highly useful.  The author of this program can
  207. attest to that, as he originally wrote StudyMaster Flash Cards for his 
  208. own use as a law school study aid, and has used it for many classes, 
  209. as well as studying for the bar exam, with excellent results.
